Geneseo
in the News
Between
April 1 and June 21, a period of approximately 11 weeks, SUNY Geneseo
faculty, staff and students fielded dozens of inquiries from local, regional
and national media. In addition, news items were published in newspapers
across the state as a result of news release distribution.
Highlights include the following: Jerry Wrubel, director of career
services, fielded a call from a Newsweek magazine reporter interested
in finding out more about what the most popular majors and courses are
among college students these days. Associate Dean Stephen Burwood
fielded a call from the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle about
the Colleges linkages and exchange programs with international colleges
and universities. Several media outlets called to find out more about
Geneseo grad Kathy Whipples upcoming appearance in the ABC
television reality show "The Benefactor." In addition, several
media outlets, including the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle,
The Livingston County News and The Buffalo News covered
the Colleges 138th commencement. A reporter from New Scientist
magazine expressed interest in Distinguished Professor of Physics and
Astronomy Dave Meisels recent presentation on "The Curious
Case of the Missing Meteors" at the American Astronomical Society
annual meeting in Denver in June. WXXI-AM 1370 and WHAM-AM 1180 broadcast
reports on the signing of an "alcohol pact" by SUNY Geneseo,
the Village of Geneseo and village merchants. President Christopher
C. Dahls comments on Brockport President Paul Yus appointment
to the presidency of San Jose State University were published on the front
page of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Dahl was also quoted
in a Buffalo News article titled "Graduation rates stir discussion."
The Buffalo News published an item about Geneseos receipt
of a grant to install a prototype computer cluster. The Livingston
County News and The Lake and Valley Clarion each published
articles on Kurt Cylkes (sociology) research into fixing
the official village clock. Cylke was also quoted in a Rochester D&C
front page/Living Section article titled "Bumper Detail"
(about trendy oval bumper stickers). The Rochester Business Journal
published a front-page article about the Integrated Science Facility titled
"College sees $53 million research center as vital." Melanie
Blood (School of Performing Arts) was interviewed by WOKR-TV 13 and
WROC-TV 8 about her direction of "The Laramie Project" and the
subsequent damage done to the performance promotion posters. David
Gordon (Provosts office), Kelly Clark (Center for Community)
and several students were interviewed by Fox News at the One World diversity
event. An article titled "Geneseo event hails diversity" about
the One College, One Community, One World event was published in the Rochester
D&C; several photos were included, and several Geneseo students
were interviewed for the article. The College was noted for its computer
access as top "unwired" college in The Buffalo News.
Richard Finkelstein (English) was quoted in a front page/Rochester
D&C Our Towns article on poetry and teens. Jeff Koch
(political science) was interviewed by WHAM 1180 about Congressman Amo
Houghtons decision not to seek reelection this year.
