Geneseo Seniors Honored for Volunteerism; Help Geneseo Fire Department Operate Year ’Round

A reception to honor the graduating SUNY Geneseo students who served the village and town of Geneseo as members of the Geneseo Fire Department was held in April, and village and college dignitaries were on hand to recognize and applaud the students’ efforts.

"These seniors have given of their time and talent to the community in a variety of ways," said Bruce Godsave, associate professor emeritus and Geneseo Fire Department volunteer. "They have attended classes in order to be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians or firefighters, and worked regular weekly shifts on the ambulance, responded to fires, motor vehicle accidents, and ambulance calls as any other member of the fire department." He added that the students have helped the fire department with fund raisers, assisted with special programs such as recruitment, and worked to help maintain the fire hall and the equipment within.

Godsave added that the Geneseo Fire Department would not be able to meet every one of its more than 1,200 ambulance calls a year without the students. "No other department in Livingston County has the volume (of calls) that we do, and that is before Rural Metro moved out of the county and left the College calls to Geneseo," he explained.
