Summer 2005 CAMPUS NOTES Summer Construction Projects Under Way It’s summertime, and a number of construction projects on campus are under way, reports Director of Facilities Planning and Construction Jeffrey Kaplan, R.A. A full copy of the College’s annual construction report, along with detailed maps, are at http://www.geneseo.edu/~pplant/projects.htm. Questions regarding the following projects can be addressed to facilities planning and construction at Ext. 5511. This summer’s work is challenging the usual routines at the College. The first challenge is the reconstruction and realignment of Letchworth Road, which began after Commencement. The second challenge will be the re-roofing project at Sturges Hall, which also began in May. In late summer, crews will complete the Ontario Hall renovation project. The College also will continue its sprinkler installation project in residence halls. By the end of summer, 75 percent of the residence halls will have sprinklers. Geneseo is well ahead of virtually all other state schools in meeting the goal of having 100 percent of residence halls installed with sprinklers. Here are some highlights: Integrated Science Facility: The project remains scheduled for substantial completion in February 2006. The Blake Patio has been delayed because of a dispute between the contractor and the subcontractor responsible for the patio concrete slab. Much work will occur this summer “outside the fence” as sidewalks are reconstructed around the building and gas service is installed. North-South road replacement project: Already the staging area is being established near the tennis courts and earthwork has begun for the construction of eight new tennis courts to the north. The portion of Letchworth Road between Court Street and Wyoming Hall already has been closed to all but essential vehicular traffic. This portion of the road will be milled and then rolled to provide a useable surface for essential vehicles, but it will still be easy for the contractor to dig through it as underground utilities are placed. Essential traffic needs to use caution. South side sprinkler project: The contractor has begun the sprinkler installation work in Onondaga, Nassau and Suffolk halls. A storage container has been placed in the turning area north of Red Jacket Dining Hall. Except for small excavations to connect water mains, the work of this project will be completely within the buildings. Sturges Hall roof replacement project: The contractor has begun to establish the project staging area, located just south of Sturges Hall. Thearea will be enclosed by fencing and a project trailer will be within the fenced area. Protective “fencing” will be installed along the roof parapet and covered entrances are being constructed at the exterior ground level. Exterior roofing work this season will be mostly limited to the roof south of the tower. Saratoga Terrace: Contractors will perform drilling operations at the ends of the downhill units in order to study a water intrusion problem. This drilling will not take more than a few days. Other investigative work will occur within the downhill units and be completed in early August. Putnam Hall: Contractors will alter the configuration of the heating boiler exhaust stack to eliminate the possibility of exhaust odors entering the building.
